Medborgerskabsprøven: the test for permanent residence

Medborgerskabsprøven in English: who needs it for permanent residence, what the questions are about, the dates and how to prepare the Danish.

  • 25 questions30 min
  • Pass20 right

Medborgerskabsprøven is a short written test about Danish democracy and everyday life: 25 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, and you pass with at least 20 right. It is one of the supplementary requirements for permanent residence. Test centres list the next one as 25 November 2026, with registration closing 21 October 2026.

In short

  • What: a test about Danish society, in Danish. It is not a language test.
  • Format: 25 multiple-choice questions, 30 minutes, no aids.
  • To pass: at least 20 of the 25 answers right.
  • When: twice a year, in May–June and November–December. In 2026: 3 June and 25 November.
  • Used for: permanent residence, as one of four supplementary requirements. You need two of the four.

Facts checked 19 October 2026 against the rules for the test (BEK nr. 452 of 13 May 2024), the test paper from June 2026 published by the Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), and the test centres’ listings. Rules change: check siri.dk, nyidanmark.dk and your test centre before you register.

When is medborgerskabsprøven in 2026?

The test is held on the same day all over Denmark, twice a year. In 2026 the first test was on 3 June, from 11.00 to 11.30. The test centres list the next one as 25 November 2026, with the registration deadline 21 October 2026. If you are reading this after the deadline, you are planning for the summer test in 2027. SIRI publishes the dates and deadlines for the next year in the autumn.

What is medborgerskabsprøven?

The word means “the active citizenship test”: medborgerskab is citizenship in the sense of taking part in society, and prøven is “the test”. It is not the test for Danish citizenship. That one is indfødsretsprøven, with 45 questions and a language requirement next to it.

Medborgerskabsprøven is about permanent residence (permanent opholdstilladelse). On top of the basic requirements, there are four supplementary requirements, and you must meet two of them. A passed medborgerskabsprøve is one. According to nyidanmark.dk, meeting all four lets you apply after four years of legal residence instead of eight. The other requirements, and where the Danish tests fit, are on the residence and citizenship page.

How many questions, and how many must be right?

There are 25 questions, and you have 30 minutes. Each question has two or three answers, and one of them is right. You pass with at least 20 right answers. That is 80 %, so you can make five mistakes, not more. No aids are allowed: no dictionary, no phone.

How do you prepare for medborgerskabsprøven?

The questions are based on an official learning material, Læremateriale til medborgerskabsprøven – demokrati og hverdagsliv i Danmark. It is about democracy, rights and duties, everyday life, culture and history. This is how I tell my students to prepare:

  1. Read the official material in Danish, twice. It is good reading practice at the same time. Look up the words you do not know, and write them down.
  2. Practise with the old tests. SIRI publishes the tests after they have been held. Take one with a clock: 30 minutes, no help.
  3. Be careful with practice sites. Websites with “practice questions” are not official, and the language schools warn that they cannot replace the material.
  4. Read every question twice. Most wrong answers come from reading too fast, especially when a question has ikke in it.

How do you register?

You register with a test centre that holds the test, often a language centre (et sprogcenter), before the deadline. There is a fee. It is set in the rules and adjusted every year, so check the price with the test centre when you register. After the deadline, you wait for the next test.

The Danish words in the questions

The test is in Danish, and the questions start with the same few words. Know them well:

  • Hvemwho
  • Hvadwhat
  • Hvornårwhen
  • Hvor mangehow many
  • Hvilkenwhich

And these words come up again and again in the material:

democracy demokrati
an election et valg
the Danish parliament Folketinget
a municipality en kommune
the constitution grundloven
freedom of speech ytringsfrihed
equality ligestilling
a right en rettighed
a duty en pligt
an association, a club en forening

Questions people ask

Is medborgerskabsprøven a language test?

No. It tests what you know about Danish society, but you read the questions in Danish. If you are at module 3 or 4 of the language school, reading the questions is usually not the problem.

Is medborgerskabsprøven the same as indfødsretsprøven?

No. Medborgerskabsprøven has 25 questions and is for permanent residence. Indfødsretsprøven has 45 questions and is for citizenship.

Can I take the test again if I fail?

Yes. You can register for a later test. Use the time to read the material again and take an old test with a clock.
