Privacy policy

1. Who is responsible

The website danishwithlui.com and the practice pages behind the login are run by:

Lui Høyer is the data controller under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Danish Data Protection Act. If you have a question about your data, write to jeger@luihoyer.dk.

2. What we store, and why

2.1 Your account

When you create a practice page, we store your first name, your email address and your password. The password is stored as a hash, which means we cannot read it. We also store when you signed up and ticked the consent box, and when you last logged in.

Why: so you can log in, and so Lui knows which student you are.
Legal basis: our agreement with you about the practice page (GDPR article 6(1)(b)).

2.2 Your profile

The dialogues on your page are built from what you write in your profile. The profile can contain your name and surname, your birthday and year of birth, whether you are a man or a woman, where you come from (country and city), where you live now (country, city and area, when you moved to Denmark or started learning Danish, and why you want to move), your job, how and where you work, who you live with, the languages you speak, your hobbies, your usual café order and which module you are in at language school.

Every field is optional. Whatever you leave empty is replaced by a sample student, so the dialogues still work. You can change or delete every field yourself on your profile page.

Why: to make the dialogues and exercises about you, which is what the practice page is for.
Legal basis: our agreement with you (article 6(1)(b)). Fields that go beyond what the exercises need are stored because you choose to fill them in (consent, article 6(1)(a)), and you can remove them at any time.

2.3 Your practice

We store the answers you write in exercises and writing tasks, which exercises you have solved, your mind maps, your practice list (sentences and words you want to practise), your learning settings (voice, speed, whether English is hidden, and so on), your practice tests (your answers, texts and scores, and what you told us when you signed up from a test page, such as what worries you most about the test), the days you practised, and when you were last active.

Why: so your progress is saved and your page opens where you left off, and so Lui can see what you have worked on and plan your lessons.
Legal basis: our agreement with you (article 6(1)(b)).

2.4 Lui’s lesson notes

Lui keeps short notes about each student: what you worked on, what you agreed, and what the next lesson should be about. Only Lui can see these notes.

Why: so Lui remembers what you agreed and can teach you well.
Legal basis: Lui’s legitimate interest in running her teaching (article 6(1)(f)). You have the right to see the notes about you (see section 6).

2.5 Words you add yourself

When you type your own word in a picker, for example a job or a hobby that is not on the list, that word is added to the suggestion list that other students see. They only see the word, never your name or anything else about you. Lui can see who added a word, and she can translate or hide it.

2.6 Security data

When someone signs up, we count the sign-up attempts from the same internet address (IP address) for one hour, so bots cannot create hundreds of accounts. The address is stored in a scrambled (hashed) form and is deleted after an hour.

Our host, Simply.com, keeps normal web server logs with the IP address, the time and the page requested, as every web host does. They are used only for security and operations.

Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure (article 6(1)(f)).

2.7 The voice that reads Danish aloud

When you press a play button, the Danish is normally read aloud by your own browser’s voice. Nothing leaves your device.

Lui may switch on a more natural voice from Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. If she does, the Danish sentence to be read is sent to Google, which returns an audio file. The file is stored on our server and reused for everyone who plays the same sentence. A sentence can contain your first name or other words from your profile, but never your email address or your login. Google processes the text as our processor under Google Cloud’s data processing terms and the EU standard contractual clauses. We will update this policy when that voice is switched on.

2.8 Recording yourself in the practice tests

In the oral part of a practice test you can choose to record yourself, so you can listen to how you sounded. Your browser asks for permission to use the microphone first, and you can say no and still take the test. The recording stays in your browser while the page is open: it is never uploaded or sent to us or anyone else, and it is gone when you close the page. We only store the notes you write and the boxes you tick in the test.

3. Who can see your data

  • Lui, your teacher, can see your profile, everything you write on the site and your progress.
  • Other students never see your profile, your answers or your progress. The only exception is words you add to a picker (see 2.5), which are shown without your name.
  • We never sell your data, and we never use it for advertising.

4. Who helps us process your data

  • Simply.com A/S, Denmark, hosts the website, the database and the backups, and sends the emails from the website (for example when you reset your password). Your data stays in Denmark, inside the EU.
  • Google Cloud (Google Ireland Ltd.), only if the natural voice is switched on, and only for the text of the sentences that are read aloud (see 2.7).
  • Nobody else. There are no analytics, advertising or social media services on this site.

Preply is separate. Lessons with Lui are booked and paid on preply.com, which is run by another company with its own privacy policy. We do not send your data from this site to Preply, and Preply does not send yours to us.

5. How long we keep your data

  • Your account, profile, practice and lesson notes are kept as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete everything within a month, usually within a few days. If you have not logged in for three years, Lui may delete your account.
  • Backups of the database, which we need to restore the site after an error, are kept for at most 90 days and then overwritten. A deleted account can therefore still exist in a backup for up to 90 days; backups are never used for anything else.
  • The sign-up attempt counter (see 2.6) is deleted after one hour. Simply.com keeps its server logs for a limited time under its own rules.
  • Audio files (see 2.7) are kept as long as the site uses them. They cannot be linked to you.

6. Your rights

You have the right to:

  • see the data we store about you and get a copy of it, including Lui’s lesson notes about you;
  • correct it. Your profile you can correct yourself; for anything else, write to Lui;
  • delete it. Write to Lui, and she deletes your account and everything in it;
  • limit how we use it, or object to the processing that is based on legitimate interest;
  • get your data in a file you can take with you (data portability);
  • withdraw your consent for the optional fields at any time by deleting them from your profile.

To use any of these rights, write to jeger@luihoyer.dk. We answer within a month. We may ask you to confirm the request from the email address on your account, so nobody else can get your data.

If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency: Datatilsynet, Carl Jacobsens Vej 35, 2500 Valby, Denmark, www.datatilsynet.dk.

7. Security

The whole site uses HTTPS, so what you write is encrypted on the way. Passwords are stored hashed. Only Lui has access to the administration area. Your practice pages are never cached and never indexed by search engines. The site is hosted in Denmark.

Please do not write sensitive information about yourself or others (for example about health, religion or politics) in the free text fields. The exercises do not need it, and we would rather not store it.

8. Children

The practice page is for adults and young people from the age of 13. If you are younger, a parent or guardian must write to Lui and create the account for you.

9. Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we change the date at the top. If a change matters for you, for example a new service that receives your data, we tell you on your practice page or by email before it starts.
