How do you say sun in Danish?

Sun is sol, and the sun is solen. The o is long and close, with tight, round lips, so it is not the “o” in “solo”. Sunshine is solskin, and when the sun comes out after rain, Danes say the sun is peeking out:

  • Solen skinner. The sun is shining.
  • Solen kigger frem. The sun is peeking out.

How do you say rain in Danish?

Rain is regn, and the g is not a g at all: it is said “rajn”, one syllable. The verb is at regne, which is also the verb for doing maths, so det regner can only mean one thing when you look out of the window.

  • Det regner.It is raining.
  • Det vælter ned.It is pouring down.
  • Det holder tørt.It stays dry.
  • Det skulle klare op.It is supposed to clear up.

Weather verbs: det regner, det blæser

Danish weather sentences start with det, just like “it” in English. That makes them easy: learn the verb, and the sentence is done.

DanishEnglish
Det sner.It is snowing.
Det blæser.It is windy.
Det fryser.It is freezing.
Det er overskyet.It is overcast.
Det bliver mørkt. It is getting dark.

Hot, cold, wet: the weather adjectives

After det er, the adjective takes its et-form, with a t at the end. That is the one grammar rule you need for the weather.

varmt warm
koldt cold
køligt chilly
mildt mild
vådt wet
tørt dry
gråt grey
blæsende windy
fugtigt damp
dejligt lovely

So you say det er koldt, it is cold, but en kold dag, a cold day, because there the adjective follows the noun.

Nature words: mountain, sea, forest and beach

A mountain is et bjerg; the g is silent. Denmark has no mountains. Its highest points are hills under 200 metres, and one of the best known is called Himmelbjerget, “the sky mountain”, which Danes find quite funny. The sea, on the other hand, is never far away.

  • et bjerga mountain
  • havetthe sea
  • strandenthe beach
  • skoventhe forest, the woods
  • en marka field
  • naturennature
  • Skal vi tage på stranden?Shall we go to the beach?
  • Vi går en tur i skoven. We are going for a walk in the woods.

Small talk: how Danes talk about the weather

The weather is the safest small talk in Denmark: at the bus stop, at the coffee machine, with the neighbour. These lines are from the conversation in the course, and they will get you through the first minute:

  • Sikke et vejr!What weather!
  • Nå, så fik vi regnen alligevel.Well, we got the rain after all.
  • Det er da dejligt vejr i dag, ikke?It is lovely weather today, isn’t it?
  • Tror du, det bliver regn i eftermiddag?Do you think it will rain this afternoon?
  • Hvordan er vejret der, hvor du kommer fra? What is the weather like where you come from?

And the saying you will hear many times: Der findes ikke dårligt vejr, kun forkert påklædning. There is no bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

What is the climate like in Denmark?

Denmark has a mild, damp climate, shaped by the sea around it. Summers are rarely very hot, winters are usually not very cold, and there is wind and rain all year round. Danes complain most about two things: the wind, because they cycle everywhere, and the dark winter afternoons. The Danish weather service is DMI, and checking its app is a daily habit for many.

The dark is what newcomers find hardest. In the course conversation, the advice is candles, vitamin D and hygge. The other side is summer: lyse nætter, light nights, when it hardly gets dark.

What is the weather like in Denmark in April?

Changeable. Sun, a shower, wind and sun again, sometimes in one hour. Danes even have a word for it: aprilsvejr, April weather. It is also the month of the first warm spring day, when everybody sits outside in the sun, even if it is only twelve degrees:

  • Skal vi ikke tage en øl udenfor? Det er tolv grader!Shall we have a beer outside? It’s twelve degrees!

For today’s weather, check DMI or another forecast; this page will not be up to date.
